On the right hand side in the picture is a wild bird food mixture of barley, oats, fodder radish, kale and phacelia which we planted in May. This will be left over the winter period to provide a much needed winter food source for our farmland bird species such as linnets, skylark, finches, blackbirds and dunnocks which have all been seen on these patches around the farm in the last few years.
Next to wild bird food we have radish cover crop which was planted in August. This is being used to help restructure the soil before we plant peas into these fields next spring. The cover crop will attract lots of insects which add variety to the bird’s diets. The cover crop also provides protection from aerial predators like buzzards.
